“New Unfolding” is the result of working with interference patterns to create the illusion of substance and nuance. The colors are blended across many hundreds, maybe thousands of lines arranged in layers, freezes the moiré patterns in place. Moiré patterns are optical illusions where what is received through each eye separately can not be reconciled by our brain. Is what we think we see really there?
As I worked on the image, the colors that were emerging began to imply the early spring when the leaves unfurl hence the title “New Un-folding”. this piece was included in an exhibition at Notre Dame celebrating “renewal”.
