“Contrapunctus 3” introduces a theme device and a term for us to consider. Contrapunctus 3 inverts the original theme. Simply put, where the theme goes up the inverted theme goes down and vice versa. The trick doesn’t always work but for Bach in this instance, it becomes a kind of complementary structure and recurs throughout the cycle. Bach lays that ground work with this third simple fugue.
In planning the color sequencing for the themes, I settled on the original theme as being in the range of turquoise to blue. This meant the inverted theme would be in the yellow range. This general decision determined how the images would evolve. other less strict themes were cast in other color ranges, mainly greens and reds.
