“Contrapunctus- 8” Is the first for 4 major large fugues. They form a group both thematically and stylistically and are grouped together as C-8-triple fugue. C-9,10 double fugues, C-11 triple.
C-8-11 are interdependent and independent. Interdependence comes by way of new themes reminiscent of the original but expanded and re-imagined. joined by their inversions. New thematic material is also present and fit seamlessly into the framework. Double and Triple fugues require attention to detail. I would guess it is akin to juggling. Not only do the themes need to fit together with each other, they need to do so while fitting with themselves. Every fugue until now has led to this point and C-8 is a triple fugue presenting each fugue in turn with a culmination of all three themes coalescing toward the end.
It seems so inevitable by now that the true monumentality of what is occurring musically seems to get lost. As if to call attention to the musical intricacy. In these 4 panels, the greatest complexity so far, is found . It is also where the most intricate brocading occurs. The weave structure has the most visual contrast. This all makes for the most unified visual appearance occurring near the middle of the fugue cycle.
