“Contrapunctus-9” is a double fugue which has a highly ornamented first theme which feels like a vine wrapping itself around itself. The second theme is the original theme and it too is wrapped by the flowing first theme. The two themes are treated as fugues simultaneously yet distinctly. The first theme __
This particular fugue was given an updated sound treatment by the Swingle Singers in the 1960s. A form of jazz vocalization called scat with voiced syllable sounds provided the “instrumentation”. The LP at the time was a huge hit, and many choral groups took up the Bach fugue.
Saying, this is a fairly straightforward fugue is relative. These four fugues the two doubles and two triples share themes and inversions of themes which make for a kind of visual unity in the very middle of the cycle of fugues. It was an interesting exercise to make the color map for these 4 because I felt compelled to consider how they were all related.
