“Geometry has a reputation for being cold and impersonal”. When I heard that, it made me wonder if that perception was perhaps why so many people find geometry so dislikable and it prompted me to want to explore how one might make it warmer, more organic.

I had long observed that various species of trees for instance obeyed specific growth patterns which were distinct. Yet each tree was individual and different from every other tree in the species. Why? I asked. Eventually I fastened on the idea of conditional alteration. The growth pattern was still there and operating but the vagaries of happenstance (place, conditions, catastrophes) would certainly play a part. What gives is the inevitable precision of the geometry I thought.

“Brian’s Sunrise” is an exploration of how geometry might become situational. In this case, the interpretation of a sunrise on a structured landscape- with its geometry altered to its place which happens to be is a 22 x 22” surface area. There is a lot going on, not the least of which is perhaps a warm geometry.
