A square is an interesting compositional cha;;edge. Part of the problem is how to establish vertical or horizontal orientation. It is natural for us to either be vertical (standing) or horizontal (resting). The obvious is something centric. The ancient greeks knew about ratios that could subdivide the square into harmonic ratios.

I have been fascinated by the huge variety of divisions that are possible. Geometry means “earth measure” and this opens up even more possibilities.

While this painting explores a couple newer ideas, it also opens the possibilities of surface articulation evident in the textured surface. It is the largest rendition of a geometric relationship I’ve produced. (2020)

The title “Prelude in Red and Gold- the Geometer’s Closet” derives from using musical terms to focus attention on the fact of the painting’s elements and surface arena.
